Clarionet
Classic 1960s racing yacht
Pioneering design innovation
Clarionet is a classic 1960s one-ton sloop famous for its pioneering design of a separate rudder and keel which is now commonplace on most yachts.
She is one of the most successful yachts designed by Olin Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens, arguably the world’s most famous yacht designers. Clarionet has had a long and successful racing record from her first year (1966) when she won or came second in almost every race she took part in, including Cowes Week and the RORC St Malo Race.
Built in 1966 by Lallows of Cowes, Clarionet was extensively altered throughout the years to maximise IRC regulations, but in 2019/2020 she underwent a refit that fully restored her original design. The refit included the other notable original design element of using a flat plank to create a flexible boom, allowing flattening of the sail. This feature wasn’t as successful as the keel and rudder had been in changing future designs but has been restored to the exact detail.
